Acrylic Shower Remodel Cost: The Budget Option vs Tile

An acrylic shower remodel runs $4,000 to $7,000 against $8,000 to $15,000 for tile. The savings are real and so are the trade-offs. Where acrylic is the smart call and where it is a false economy.

Acrylic surround and tiled shower compared showroom

An acrylic shower remodel costs $4,000 to $7,000 installed, against $8,000 to $15,000 for a comparable tiled shower. The saving is roughly half, and it comes almost entirely from labor: an acrylic surround goes in over three to five days, a tiled shower takes two to three weeks. If you are remodeling a shower on a budget, this single choice saves more than every material decision combined.

We sell both from our Derwood showroom, and we make more margin on tile. We still tell a fair number of people to buy acrylic, and this article explains when.

Where the budget actually goes

On an acrylic job, the wall set itself is $600 to $1,800 and the base is $300 to $900. Everything else is demolition, framing, the valve and trim, the glass and the labor to put it together. That means upgrading from a basic acrylic set to a premium one changes the project by a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand. If you are going acrylic, buying the better panel is the cheapest quality you will ever add.

The three situations where acrylic is the right answer

A secondary or guest bathroom. Low use, low scrutiny, and nobody is evaluating your grout. The money is better spent in the primary bathroom.

A rental or a house you are selling within two years. A clean new acrylic shower shows as well as tile in listing photos at half the cost, and buyers rarely discount for it in a secondary bathroom.

A bathroom that must stay in service. Three to five days versus three weeks is the difference between inconvenient and unworkable in a one-bathroom house.

Where it is a false economy

In a primary bathroom in a home you are keeping, the cost difference amortizes to a few hundred dollars a year over the life of the installation, and the tiled shower will still look current when the acrylic has yellowed at the base and scuffed at the corners. If you are already paying for the demolition, the framing and the plumbing, the incremental cost of tile buys a much longer runway.

The other false economy is a cheap acrylic set in a high-use shower. Thin panels flex, flexing cracks the silicone at the joints, and a leaking seam behind a one-piece surround is a much worse problem than a cracked tile.

For the full tiled breakdown see walk-in shower remodel cost, and if you are also removing a tub, the conversion adds $900 to $2,000.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an acrylic shower cost installed?

$4,000 to $7,000 for a standard size including demolition, the wall set, the base, a framed or semi-frameless door and labor. The acrylic components themselves are usually under $2,500 of that.

Is an acrylic shower cheaper than tile?

Yes, usually about half. A tiled shower of the same size runs $8,000 to $15,000. The difference is mostly labor and schedule, not material.

How long does an acrylic shower last?

Ten to twenty years with normal use. Thin builder-grade panels sit at the low end and premium thicker panels at the high end. Tile in the same shower would last twenty to forty years.

Does an acrylic shower lower home value?

In a secondary bathroom, rarely. In a primary bathroom of a mid or upper-tier home, buyers notice, and it reads as a builder-grade finish in a room where they expect a custom one.

What is the cheapest way to remodel a shower?

Keep the drain and the valve where they are, choose an acrylic surround, and accept a framed door. Those three choices together are the difference between roughly $4,500 and roughly $12,000.
